This is a good one and I so few people actually get to do it.
Betsy I love this (and you're certainly a damn good navigator!). I have to admit I've been thinking about it a lot since the subway ride. I'm not sure where it applies (or doesn't) either, just that it did there and I agree, there is something freeing about knowing not everything works 'right side up' all the time.

Okay, I'm going to be thinking on your lesson for a while. I can see where this would apply in a lot of areas in life, not just business. I can also see this as the new breakup line: "It's just that our relationship is more valuable in pieces than it is whole."

As for me, a dozen years ago I was just waking up to the idea that I didn't have to take what was given to me and could even go after something entirely different if I wanted. That was true for career, love, and lifestyle. I'm now thousands of miles away from where I started - literally and figuratively - and the only thing I know is that I have thousands of miles still to go. But I'm so glad I learned to go off the map and make my own way. I'm a pretty good navigator!

Thanks Katelyn, one thing is clear, there's never a dull moment in the start up world. Funny that "backwards" is our shared experience...wonder how much of that is good (outside the box) and how much of it is just silly. Best of luck!

Nathalie, it's astounding to read that you began your first start-up at the age of 21. At 20, I just began to learn about the intense and often intricate world of entrepreneurship a year ago - I couldn't imagine how much courage it would take to jump into an ownership role in another year. Congratulations to you. I enjoy this post - yes, the parts are often worth more than the whole. One of the things I find most exciting about start-ups is the fact that they are so backwards, they ways in which they are built are so unique. I would love to hear more about your experiences with your first start-up, keep writing! :)
